Voters For Preservation provided
informational picketing and leafleting in Round Lake Beach on Thursday, June 21.
Group members distributed educational materials regarding the plans proposed by
the Lake County Forest Preserve District Board to build a 15,000-seat Olympic
equestrian stadium, plus other buildings, parking lots, etc., within the
boundaries of Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda, should Chicago's bid for
the 2016 Olympics be accepted.
The group staged this action outside the meeting
of the Lake County Municipal League at Round Lake Beach Civic & Cultural
Center, beginning at 7 p.m.
"The purpose of
this activity was to educate people as to the many downsides of such a major
construction project in a forest preserve," according to a VFP spokesman. "We
believe the county board is acting in a manner inconsistent with the wishes of
taxpayers who voted to set aside land for preservation," said the spokesman, who
added that the board's plan is also "inconsistent with the International Olympic
Committee's Green Policy."
