Lakewood Preserve

I would like to present a point of view regarding the use of the Lakewood Forest Preserve in the 2016 Olympics.

First, the preserve doesn't belong to the village of Wauconda. It is not paid for only by the taxpayers of that community. It is paid for by all taxpayers in Lake County. It is quite by accident that it is near Wauconda.

Second, the preserve doesn't belong to the members of the Lake County Board/Forest Preserve District, but to the people of Lake County. The members are elected officials and they are only the stewards. As such, it is their sole responsibility to protect Lakewood for the people of Lake County.

I have never read their mission statement. However, it should say something like: "The mission of the Lake County Forest Preserve District is to purchase, preserve and protect open land, woods, lakes, wetlands and wildlife for the purpose of enjoyment by all the people of Lake County. The use of the preserves shall be available to all and shall be restricted from commercial use by any company and organization."

Third, it is not "just a few local home- owners" who have concerns. All of us who live in this county and appreciate the advantages of our wonderful forest preserves do not wish to see any wildlife habitat or trail systems destroyed. Contrary to all the protestations that there will be minimal damage done to Lakewood, I do not believe it will be possible to avoid extensive environmental impact, especially to the wildlife.

I only hope that all who are involved in this gigantic "give away" of land which belongs to the people of Lake County will come to their senses. Please don't let greed or the chance to be in the spotlight spoil a beautiful forest preserve.

Up to now, the current members of the Forest Preserve District have done a creditable job. Don't let us down now. There is another option, Tempel Farms, which should be explored.
